Photographers for the men’s magazines are always on
the lookout for busty models. They sell; DD are dollar
signs to photographers.Aome busty models present some
problems to a photographers posting ability. Some
models just have a great set of boobs and no ass or to
big a tummy. We have to work out tricks to make a
model of average looks and figure a few notches above
what she normally looks, so saleable pictures result.
A model like Christy Canyon solves all of those
problems. It was hard not to take a great picture of
her. So when I heard the buzz about this great model
with the fantastic face and huge tits I headed
straight to the agency with my Polaroid  camera and
hoped she would show. 75% of the time it’s a no show
and a waste of a photographers time to sit around in
an agency to catch the first glimpse of a new model
and a chance to book her first.  My first impressions
of Christy came from a male model who used to birddog
models for World Modeling. He kept raving about this
girl he met on Hollywood Blvd. in a dress shop, or was
it a lingerie shop? “God you gotta see this girl I met
on Hollywood Blvd. She has these huge tits; his hands
go up to his chest and out a half a foot. She’s
gorgeous, I’ll get her to model, just wait and see!
Male models are always on the lookout for new talent.
They get a finders fee about $100.00 bucks in those
days. They could also be the first to work with her if
she decided to do a boy girl layout. Girls always
requested a guy they knew so the first time they did a
boy girls layout for a magazine it went smooth. After
a few no shows, she came in and I arrived ten minutes
after she went into the modeling studio to take her
Polaroid’s I think I was one of the few that were in
the agency that day. The owner came out of the studio
and saw me waiting and I could see he was plenty
excited with his new find. Again he held his hands out
in front with the usual gesture that was common when
you found a stacked model.

I said I wanted to take a look and shoot some
Polaroid’s. He popped his head back in the door and
told Christy: Hold it a second, don’t get dressed just
yet I have photographer who would like to take a look
at you and take some test shots. As I entered the
studio door I could see this olive tanned 18 year old
beauty. He was taking off her blouse again for me to
shoot some more tests. She opened that top and I could
see that they were DD’s and of a perfect size and
shape just from the outline they made in the cup. She
un snapped her bra and out popped two perfect melon
size boobs. I swear they make a  gunk sound as they
dropped out of her bra and bounced against her chest.
I shot ten polaroids in a matter of minutes.

I booked her for the next day, which she cancelled out
to shoot for Ron Vogel, but I got her by the end of
the week and booked a big estate that belonged to a
famous TV star who loved stacked women.  That shoot
was a perfect day with perfect exposures and
backgrounds. Some outdoor shots at the end of the day
and a couple of indoor sets: one on a bed and the
other on a couch.

I shot her 5 other times and some stills on movie
sets. She got better at each session. She was a
contemporary  of Tracy Lords. They started modeling
about the same time, only Christy was of Legal age.

The guy who brought her into modeling got to pose with
her in a few layouts, but once she learned the ropes
of the business, she dropped him. I think she favored
older me and I had once read in an interview she gave
to a magazine, that she said she had moved out on her
own  around 18 because she felt like she did not
belong when her parents divorced and re married other
people and then had other children. You can really
feel like you don’t fully belong.

She later started doing adult videos and posing for
all the big magazines. Most girls don’t last in the
still modeling and go directly into video when the
still work run dry. Christy worked a long time with
the still photographers, but video pays more so
eventually it gets harder and harder to book the great
models for stills as they build a video career.

I met up with her about 5 years ago in a dance club in
Van Nuys, CA she was judging a strip contest. She
looked great!

A truly great model comes along about once every ten 

years or so. Dani Ashe was in that class. I hired her off a 

 test shot. Her agent CHN International in Hollywood 

called and said “I know you love to shoot big bust 

girls,  have I got a winner for you. Her name is Danni Ashe.

Hal went on about how she was only in town for 5 days and I’d better 

book her quick cause she was going back to Seattle to 

dance. I heard that story before, put a time frame on 

the photographer to get the model some work quick. 

Agents never know how long a model will decide to 

model. There’s always a chance she will get cold feet, 

or meet some guy who will talk her out of modeling. 

I decided to take a trip into Hollywood from the San 

Fernando Valley, about 20minutes back then. If she was 

that good I better get her booked right away, but I 

don’t like to book sight unseen, to much can go wrong; 

like a giant pimple on a modes face ( another story 

worth telling at another time) lesion learned  I 

arrived in the nick of time as this agent took 2 hr. 

lunches an it was close to 11:30 when he left. He 

pulled out one roll of 120 contact sheet with 12 black 

and white shots on it. Hal was a former photographer 

and new that a 120 Rollei could get a photographer a 

better idea of how a model would photograph than a 

Polaroid would. 

Like a character it a cartoon, my eyes lit up like 

dollars signs. They didn’t quite pop out of my head, 

but they could have. I booked her off that contact 

sheet, trying to not show to much enthusiasm, didn’t 

want to pay a premium to Hal for getting her first. 

That was always a problem in this business. Suze 

offers more money and the model cancels your shoot and 

books her. I just acted to quick she hadn’t finished 

making all the rounds of the photographers and I 

booked her for the next day. Only being in town for 5 

days a lot of photographers did not get to shoot her 

on her first trip to Hollywood.

She arrived at the studio the next day on time 9:30am 

and ready to work; a good sign that things would go 
smooth. She was in makeup for 90 minutes and was ready 
to shoot. She was not nervous, but she was quiet, not 
shy, but not a slut either. Danni is Short and very 
Irish looking. I would say about five foot two inches 
with a true hour glass figure; a small waist  with 
wide hips, beautiful blue eyes and short blonde hair. 
Good natural expression. No complaints with this gal. 
I shot two layouts that day: one went to Club magazine 
and the other went to Juggs magazine. I also shot a 
short video of her that day. 
 
 
Everything I shot on Danni Ashe sold in a very short time. 
Next time she came in town she got really booked up and was shot many 
times. I regret not shoots additional sets on her My 
best impression of her was those ski sloped tits, The 
best angle to view those were from about two feet 
below looking up, You only get that view when she was 
dancing on stage or being photographed. I love to have 
the model stand above me with me shooting up at her 
tits. She could straddle me and bend forward. That was 
the best angle to view those perfect tits. If you have 
ever seen the Movie Blow-up you know the pose. David 
Hemming straddled over Varushka like he was having sex. 
I just reversed it and had her stand over me. Best 
view ever of those classic boobs, and I have proof of 
it pictures.

The last fat girl I ever shot

My nude magazine market was for busty cute women. But
there were many other markets that purchased nude
layouts of various types of women. One of my markets
was bugging me to shoot some fat girls for them.
Specialty publications that were put out for the adult
book store market. Fat Fucks was one of their titles.
I was photographing about 8 layouts for month for this
publisher and he kept asking me to shoot him some fat
girls. They were offering good money for them, but who
wanted to shoot them. The type they wanted was the
really big ones. At lest 300 pounds. It was made clear
that I would be doing them a favor if I shot a few for
them and they would purchase more of the cuties from
me.

So, how do you pose a fat girl? Its not easy, there is
nothing you can do to make them look even fatter than
they already are. You not trying to hide anything
either, so what left except various shots of
undressing and perhaps some eating of sweets. Ice
cream and chocolate  surip smeared  gives the model
something to do. Just forget about trying to make them
look good. This is just not anything you can do.
You’re a journeyman poser and photographer, you have
learned all the tricks to make a model look better
than she looks in real life. A girl has a long nose,
no profiles please. A girls got fat legs, keep them
apart when you pose them, don’t mash them on a bench
or chair, take the weight of them, etc.

So I shot a few fat one from time to time, no big deal
I thought, but shooting those big ones would upset
your style for a day or two. You just could not go
back into the studio and shoot a winner. You had to
recover from the experience. Get your sense of beauty
back. The straw that broke the camels back came with a
450 to 500 pound “beauty” that that Fat Fucks magazine
wanted real bad. This model can’t remember her name,
she later became kind of famious for her fatness. She
did a line of greeting cards that had her nude on them
and with cute saying inside. I didn’t make her
famious, someone else did. O use to see in the
supermarket pulp magazine :” worlds fattest model tell
all”

I wasn’t sure this 450 pound model could even make it
up to the second floor walkup studio, but she, did
even though it took her 5 minutes to make it up a
flight of stairs. Once she inside the studio she could
not fit in the makeup chair. So the makeup girl had to
do the makeup job with the fact girl on the bed.

After makeup was done, the makeup girl pulled me aside
and said she is sweating under her layers of fat and
it smells in the makeup room. The model had to pickup
her rolls of fat and put babypower in the fold to dry
the sweat. I was not looking forward to the more
gritter encounters….

I f I were Diane Arbus or Joel peter Witkin: the
approach to shooting this would have been different
story. There is a limited market for fatwomen and if
you don’t understand the fetish, you will not know
what to shoot. I am thinking make her look appealing,
but the fact was, there was no way in my mind that
could be done. One roll of film and I had exhausted
all of the possibilities as far as I was concerned,
but art directors need some variety go get enough for
a 80 page magazine  to justify the $15.00 cover price.
I was quite a challenge to get about 5 rolls of film
shot. I put the model on a bed about half way through
and she broke it in half, I suggested we just shoot her on a
mattress on the floor. She said it was a bad idea. 
The last time she tried a shoot like that she couldn’t get up
and the photographer had to get four guys to help her to her feet.
She did not fit in any of my
other sets, I think I ended up with her in a very
large shower we had in the studio and finished by
hosing her down. I couldn’t shoot right for about a
week. My makeup girl told me she that was the last fat
girl she ever wanted to makeup and I told the art
director please give someone else the job, I was just
burned out on his fat girl series.

A few years later I was shooting in a rental location
in the Hollywood hills and the photographer I had
rented the house from shot a lot of gay stuff, he had
a real feel for that type of stuff as he was gay. He
would also shoot nude girls, but he was never as good
at it as he was at shoot guys.

We started to chat at lunch one day talking about
models, magazines, payrates etc. I brought up the
subject of the fattest girl I ever shot, and he said,
oh ya I know her I shot a lot of greeting card stuff
on her. It was the same model, but she had gotten even
fatter than when I had shot her a few years before.

He told me a very bizarre story about how she had a
good career as a fat model and she met some guy: my
friend refered to the guy as a “feeder” What the hell
is a feeder I asked?
A feeder is guy who has an extreme fetish for fat
women. It’s a very dangerious fetish because he get
off on making her gain weight and just getting fatter
everyday. She gained several hundred pounds with this
“fat lover” and was on her was to an early grave. This
guy cut her off from everyone and was very possessive.
Finally her parents had to do an intervention to
rescue her from a fatal heart attack.

Not sure what ever happened to this model, but I was
stuck on the story, Never heard of a feeder before, a
beater yes, but not a feeder Anyway, she was that last

My previous life of shooting nude models for a living was a non stop life of thrills…most of them cheap. One day I awoke and went into the studio. my partner Gern had a shoot, I never paid attention much to who he shot and he paid little to mine. We were both shooting an average of three girls a week.
Often fighting over who would use the studio.So I arrived and he was there setting up his backgrounds. Hey Zen…he said. You want to model today? You don’t have to get nude for this one…just more like a prop. Damn I thought. I didn’t know who the model would be but thought it always more fun when I could get naked with one. The model was Danni Ashe. In those days she was pretty much just beginning (otherwise gern could not afford her fees).So I met her…she was pleasant and showed a bit more class than most models. and I posed with her as a sculptor or a pot thrower…can’t remember what it was. I think maybe there was a potter’s wheel so I did get an excuse to put my arms around her.If I knew then what a big star on the internet she would become, I probably would have been more exciting.      If you go back to 1964 when I started to shoot nudes
with a  well know Hollywood photographer as his
assistant, You could not show any pubic hair in any
picture; this was 5 years before Bob Guccioni  of
Penthouse took the first daring steps to bush
liberation. I do remember Playboy having published a
postage stamp size photo of a model and I think the
Post Office tried to ascertain if that black spot
between the models leg was a shadow or black panties
or the real thing. At that size under a magnifying
glass its just a few dots of ink and nothing more: dam
they missed their chance to bust the Hef.

     Today its hard to fine a girl or model that doesn’t
shave her box. In fact it hard to find models who will
let it grow out so you can photograph a full bush. The
full bush is a relic of the past with most young
women. But it always wasn’t so.

     Strippers were the only models that shaved their
pussies at that time, because the vice squad was
always on hairwatch at the local strip joint. So a
stripper has to shave it all off and just cover her
labia and she was legal. Sometimes though a model
would come into the studio and have a bush so big she
could enter it in the local Horticulture club and win
first prize. At that time in 1964 you only had to
worry if it stuck out from the sides of panties. It
would kill a sale if to many stray critters popped out
when they shouldn’t There really isn’t much hair on
the pussies of Asian models, but other ethnic  types,
it’s a different story. I remember a  Persian model we
shot who had so much hair it continued up her belly in
a narrow line that stopped at the navel. The belly
hair presented more of a problem than the big bush did
as we just  kept the panties on for all of the front
shots. If we had to get close-up to half-length then
the trim scissors came out and we cut away just what
was poking out of the bathing suit. These photo shoots
were used in national magazines like Rogue, Ace, Vue,
Caper, Modern Man, Sir, Knight,  and Adam: just to
name a few. They all had strict rules about any pubic
hair.

    Frontal shots were always covered with some silly prop
so it looked like the model was humping a pillow; also
it could be a very provocative shot if the models legs
were wide spread and she had her hands covering or
maybe even a wine bottle. Always watching for that
shot where the short curlies might show.

     At this time the only legally allowed magazines to
show pubic hair were the nudist magazines, but their
poses could not be provocative or sexual in nature.

    Frontal pubic hair was the reason most guys, who had never even been to a nudist colony, bought them.  They were quite big sellers.

     At that time even the models were kind of shy, I
remember them leaving the set to go to the bathroom
and they covered themselves top and front like they
were caught in the nude by accident. It was kind of
hard to even get a glimse of a new models snatch
because they never had to show it on camera and so
they kept it pretty hidden thinking that’s private and
I am good girl, cant see it. Every once in a while you
would get a girl that wasn’t to shy and you could get
a good look at what it looked pussy looked like, If it
wasn’t to covered with snatch hair, one could learn
that different girls had different types of labia.
Some had no outer lips and looked like a Greek statue.
Others had a lot of skin that protruded out from the
other folds. Still others had nothing visible at all.
     Now all of you may think so what! Well, when your
just 19 years old and there were no porno movies or 10
years before Hustler magazine, its of interest. If you
wanted to view snatch, you either had to get the real
think and hope she didn’t want to do it in the dark or
find some illegal photographs that were sold in places
under the counter like a barber shop. They you could
get a vague idea of what was so mysterious about that
sweet spot.

    At about that time in the San Fernando Valley there
was a publisher who was getting very daring in there
pushing the public hair to the surface. They started
with letting it just stick out of the crotch with just
a few hairs. Later they went to see through panties,
then wet see through panties: they were pushing the
line one hair at a time. These magazines were sold in
certain sections of newsstand racks usually in the
back corner of last row. Sometimes they were stapled
shut with an industrial strength staple. That might
have been the compromise with the newsstand, if you
couldn’t see it till you bought  it discouraged
browsing. 

    This publisher American Art and Parliament news were
the pioneers in “pushing pussy hair. Once they broke
that barrier the others followed First Penthouse, then
Hustler and the others followed.

    Once it was legal to shoot open legs, we needed to
make it visible and appetizing. That was it the early
70’s and it presented some challenges.

   When, in the mid 70s, Gern was in California photographing and tweaking nipples of beautiful young ladies; I was stuck in an office on Gay (that’s right…Gay) Street in Columbus, Ohio.  Of course when the street was named, the word ‘gay’ had a much different meaning than it does today.  But that is where the original hustler Club was and where Larry Flynt launched his ‘most raunchy of men’s magazines.

    Because of some very wise business decisions, he had quickly moved his little 2^nd classmagazine from unknown into third place behind Playboy and Penthouse. We were growing and needed more room.  Larry was always hanging out the carrot of moving to California, but he had just bought a mansion in Columbus (much to the chagrin of the locals it was located across the street from The Columbus School of Girls), so few of us really believed it.      Besides, Larry had this philosophy for his editors.  He didn’t want us getting any real pussy.  He wanted…in his words…Editors who are editing the magazine with hard-ons. He wanted guys who beat off to the magazines not guys who could actually go and get pretty girls.  Afterall, that is who his audience was and Larry really knew his audience.     So the closest any of us ever got to one of the ‘wild models’ was their photos when they arrived in my office (I was photo editor and in-house photographer)..  I did primary edits of the girlie layouts, searched out special photos for ‘serious articles’, and communicated with our staff photographers in Florida (where Larry had rented a mansion to shoot in), and our freelancers who were all in California where it was easiest to get the great nude models.    My job which at first seemed exciting, soon became drudgery.  Filing photos, long hours on the phone talking to photographers about their shootings. Listening to their stories about how horny the models would get and then jump them after the shoots…etc. etc.

   Occasionally I would get an assignment to shoot some dildo or something for Leasure Products. (not leisure…but Leasure after Althea Leasure).  I did this in the living room of my apartment.  It was a nice respite from editing but was always done after hours on my own time. 

    Finally after much complaining on my part and the fact that Larry had hired a very offbeat creative guy from Chicago to help create the ads for dildoes, it was decided to turn the old Hustler bar on the first floor, which Larry bankrupt to get the magazine off of the ground, into a studio.

     The magazine bought a Balcar power pack and three light heads with some umbrellas.   My first shot at using the studio was to do a photograph to accompany an article about ‘breaking cherry girls’ (de-flowering virgins for you guys in Rio Lindo).  Best of all it was decided that the photo to illustrate the article would be a Maraschino Cherry next to a REAL LIVE PUSSY!!!  I met with Larry and Althea. Larry explained what he wanted and said Althea would be the stylist. 

   Stylist?  Stylist? The girl’s face nor hair would be in the photo.  Why a stylist?  Only at Hustler in those days  was anyone styling pussies.  Gern was shooting hairy bushes, with an occasionally shaved girl. In most cases the West Coast photographers shot pussies that had lips lying together like as Larry’s top photographer ( a Frenchman..name withheld…but very sharp)…said…”Looked like a piece of meat. Like the steak on  my plate here. He was having dinner with Larry.  He made the claim that if Larry hired him he would make pussies like beautiful flowers opening their petals. 

     So Althea and I went downstairs into the old bar still messy with old chairs, tables etc. all over the room, with a small area with strobes and a paper back ground. Which was really unnecessary for the close up I was doing. Althea told me to set up the lights and she took the girl to the bathroom/dressing room formerly used by Hustler dancers  to style her pussy. I was not invited to watch and too shy to sneak back and take a peak.  I figured I would see it soon enough anyway.

I hadn’t even touched her yet.”  I told her about it.  She said…O wait a minute.  She ran to the dressing room and came back with some tissue and no blood.

    Sorry about that! She said.  My period started yesterday.

     Did you tell Althea? I asked.

      Yeh…she knew.

That Damn Althea. She knew!  What a joker!

Special Note: A lot of the staff didn’t like Althea.  They looked at her and her relationship with Larry and her power were a lot of John Lennon fans looked at Yoko Ono.  I was not among that group.  Like me she had a great sense of humor and we always got along great.  I was deeply saddened with her early demise from AIDS.  .

 Back in the days when I first started shooting, models had husbands or boyfriends who disliked them posing nude for some goddam naked magazine. I guess it was an ” those tits are for my eyes only” attitude”

 .. It was a big tell when a model got busted by her boyfriend or husband that that relationship was on the rocks anyway and had nothing to do with the photographer (well usually nothing…ha ha ha) Afterall I was usually only shooting a nude layout of his girlfriend. It didn’t take me too long before I changed my interviews with models.

     One of my first questions to any model: Are you married? Does your husband know you are modeling nude? One of the big give aways was when the model says “please don’t say modeling when you leave message. Just leave you name and number and I will call you back. As least they give you fare warning.

     But the psycho models plan it that way. They live so much in the moment they don’t even think it will get back to hubby, or dont care. Nude modeling is a transition type of work. Wifes or girlfriends leaving husbands or boyfriends, single women out of work, high schools grads looking for their first job, Girls who don’t want to work at McDonalds or Jack in the box, or work there and find out they can make a weeks pay in 6 hrs. of modeling. Once they do that they are ruined. Real work is just too hard. I am talking about California Valley girls in the 70’s 80’s 90’s finding nude models in that time was really a California experience only. Three agencies found almost all of the girls who appeared in all of them men’s magazines of that time. I mean ninety percent came from the L.A. area. With two agencies in Hollywood and one in the San Fernando Valley, bird dogging all of them fighting over who would get them to the best photographers first and get them as much work as they could before they burned out on posing.
